An accountant recently told me about a client who almost handed over cash to a friend who was trying to bribe a building inspector.

We live in tight-knit communities and we trust each other. There is a lot of beauty to that, but also risk. Sometimes, people take advantage of that inherent trust. The people who lose money in scams and schemes are often friends and family of the perpetrators. This is a reality we must confront. If someone approaches you with a proposition, they might be trying to sweep you into their web.

Nugget: Don’t be quiet - ask questions. Do your due diligence. Decline any transaction, wire transfer, or favor that you do not fully understand.
