Picture the father at an amusement park who tells his twelve-year-old to say he is ten at the ticket booth. He saves five bucks.
Think about it. We spend fortunes on tuition to teach our kids emes, among so many other positive midos. And we can undo all of that in fifteen seconds in order to save a few dollars.
Our children are always watching. They absorb what we practice, not what we preach. When we tell them to lie to a cashier, or to tell a caller “we aren't home,” they learn that integrity is optional when it's inconvenient. Rabbi Zeira taught that promising a child something and not delivering teaches them to speak lies.
Nugget: Model ehrlichkeit at every opportunity. The next time your child tells you a hard truth, reward their courage.
