I was flipping through a community magazine recently. Fundraising dinners, ribbon cuttings, asifas, meetings with local politicians. Page after page honored the most financially successful people.
There is nothing wrong with success and it is a mitzvah to recognize those who do good with their resources. But when we only celebrate heavy wallets, our next generation learns that money matters most.
If we want a culture of yashrus, we have to change who we point to. We need to talk up the local barber who says Tehillim between haircuts, or the honest plumber who learns Daf Yomi and gives a fair price. We have to show our children what a hero actually looks like.
Nugget: Have a different type of conversation at your Shabbos table this week. Praise a quiet hero who lives with integrity.
